Newcastle gear up for children’s cancer radio week

The Radio Lollipop team in Newcastle are gearing up for a week of live broadcasts aimed specifically at their children’s cancer ward.

The shows will take place daily from the 3rd – 7th July from 1pm-6pm and will lead up to the hospital’s summer fete on July 8th.

“At the moment, our position is that we only have radio available on one ward – our children’s cancer ward” said Lollipop Newcastle volunteer Helen Hudspith.

“However, we aim to harness this to our advantage by doing a week of shows focussed on our children’s cancer patients and their families. We hope to have lots of competitions, prizes, games, studio visits and fun, but we have also been liasing with ward staff to ensure that it gives plenty of exposure to Radio Lollipop and the work we are doing with the kids. The play specialists in particular have been keen to involve as many of the kids as possible in order to relieve the boedom of their hospital stay”.

Volunteer DJ Chris Felton said “we also thought that it’s important to have an ‘open door’ policy during the week, so that we can have profiles of the kids and ask members of the public who are passing to request songs for specific children. That way, they can feel a connection to what is going on.”

So, if you’re passing the Lollipop studio sometime during the children’s cancer radio week, please come in and say hello. We welcome anyone who’d like to find out a little bit more about who we are and the work we are doing with the children.
