Rat Race Road Trip Success

Chris Stuart and Neil Grant have completed the Rat Race Road Trip and have raised an amazing £2143 for Radio Lollipop Edinburgh to date!!!

The challenge consisted of cycling 444 miles from London to Edinburgh in four days. The cycle… began at Tower Bridge in London and finished at Holyrood Park in Edinburgh with the guys camping along the way.

Our most grateful thanks go to Neil and Chris for their outstanding efforts.

Toddler Day Out 2013

Last year, three Radio Lollipop volunteers attended the Toddler Day Out event (TDO), handing out brochures and stickers.  We were the new kids on the block, making progress towards opening a new branch in the newly refurbished “Rangatira” Children’s Ward at Waitakere Hospital.

For the 2013 TDO event, we were asked to be the MCs for the event! It was to be our first attempt at this sort of thing, and what a fantastic day it was. As well as the time spent hosting the event, we were given five time slots during the day to take the stage. The team contacted Sticky TV and Shortland Street and several stars happily joined us. There were also action songs, a “painting with sound” section and our very own guest star Campbell (an ex-patient of Starship), performing covers and original songs he had written. Volunteers were also involved in face painting and an activity table, which did not let up all day.

Overall, the day was a great success; there were over 18,000 visitors to the event, and we gained some priceless exposure.  We have already been asked to help at next year’s event! Thanks to the volunteers that helped make it a fantastic day, especially to our MCs Sam and KK.

Kind words of thanks ~ Libby Renton

On Tuesday 23rd of April, the 501st Legion WA Squad came into Radio Lollipop’s Perth studio for a surprise visit to the children… read more of the story here.

Later that week Radio Lollipop received some beautiful words of thanks…

Hi Radio Lollipop Team @ PMH,

I would like to thank you for lifting the day for my daughter last Tuesday. She spent the day at PMH having a challenge test for a peanut allergy. She was highly anxious about this and when she failed the test and needed an epipen, her fears were realised.

Fortunately she was in safe hands and has now faced her worst fear, coming out more prepared should she ever need to use an epipen in the future. However, the thing that really helped her when she was feeling very low, flat and probably still a bit scared, was when volunteers with Radio Lollipop visited the ward where she was recovering. They were dressed as Star Wars characters and she is a bit of a Star Wars fan. Some of them gathered around her bed and played a game of Uno with her, making jokes about being “Masters of the Unoverse” and generally making her smile for the first time that day.

Even though she was in hospital for such a short time, compared with many other young people, the Radio Lollipop visitors really made a positive difference. She is now going to approach some of her teachers at school to see if she can do some fundraising for Radio Lollipop, having been personally touched by the great work that you do.

Thanks and regards ~ Libby Renton

Thank you for your kind words Libby, we hope to continue to make children smile during their time in Hospital.

Star Wars in force make a surprise visit!

On Tuesday 23rd of April, the 501st Legion WA Squad came into Radio Lollipop’s Perth studio for a surprise visit to the children. All dressed up in full action gear the team spent the night entertaining the kids and volunteers.

“Thank you for this opportunity to troop around the wards at PMH for Radio Lollipop , the guys had a ball and met lots of happy kids. A big thank you to your staff… They are truly amazing at what they do” – Michael (501st Legion)

The Legion group seek to promote interest in Star Wars through the building and wearing of quality costumes and contribute to the local community through charity and volunteer work… Most recently the WA Squad attended the first ever Oz Comic Con held in Perth. Once again they were in full force and costume shaking tins for Radio Lollipop during the event. The team raised over $5000 and we are ever so grateful and thank them for their support.

Radio Lollipop look forward to seeing them in the studio again soon…
