Radio Lollipop Gold Coast wins Grill’d stores’ Local Matters initiative

Radio Lollipop Gold Coast has received amazing support from two Grill’d store locations, at Robina Town Shopping Centre and Harbour Town in Biggera Waters, Gold Coast.

Radio Lollipop was one of the entrants in the Grill’d “Local Matters” initiative, where customers are given a token to nominate the charity they’d like to see receive the top donation of $300 at the end of each month. Second and third place each receive a $100 donation. With the help of the local community, Radio Lollipop Gold Coast were voted into first place at Robina Town Shopping Centre, while placing a close second at the Harbour Town store.

Both Grill’d stores have shown extraordinary generosity, with the Robina location donating boxes of colouring-in pencils to put in Radio Lollipop welcome packs, and Harbour Town offering their help by donating onions for the fundraising Bunning’s BBQs.

Combined with the prize money, the Gold Coast team will now have more to put towards creating a WOW-experience for every child admitted into hospital.

Sergeant Surprises Sick Kids

Kids at the Gold Coast University Hospital were treated with an uplifting distraction when Police Officer, Sergeant Chris Lynch came to visit. Sergeant Lynch spent time with each child and was able to answer questions and share interesting and fun facts about the job of a policeman.

“Apart from helping to make the kids’ stay more enjoyable, I want to show them that the police are there to help and that we’re friendly,” said Sergeant Lynch.

Throughout his visit children could wear a policeman’s hat, fingerprint and have a mock mug shot taken. They especially enjoyed fingerprinting and the fact that no one had one like theirs because each and every one is unique.

The children were entertained for hours and the fun continued with Sergeant Lynch giving each child a police themed colouring-in activity sheet.

Three-year-old twins, Ryder and Jesse (pictured), were excited to meet Sergeant Lynch and wear a real policeman’s hat for their mug shot.

The surprise visit was organised by Radio Lollipop Gold Coast who aim to make a child’s stay in hospital less frightening and more fun.

“Radio Lollipop has really DSC_0091_croppedsaved the day – it’s always the best time of the day,” said Jaye, Ryder and Jesse’s mum. Sergeant Lynch accompanied Radio Lollipop volunteers Cristle, Bert, Liz and Jaime (pictured) on one of their regular Paediatrics ward visits.

In 2015, Radio Lollipop Gold Coast is expanding to include visits to Children’s Emergency and the Children’s Critical Care Unit (ICU) to see their service reach more sick children than ever before.

Ramsden Lawyers help Radio Lollipop Gold Coast

Gold Coast law firm Ramsden Lawyers are switching their legal pads for microphones as they prepare to hold a charity race day for Radio Lollipop on Saturday, Aug 23.

Radio Lollipop Gold Coast volunteer Martine Simonds says for the 2,000 children the local Radio Lollipop team reaches every year, the service is invaluable.

“For many children, it is the brightest part of their day; a welcome distraction from what can be a frightening or unpleasant time,” Ms Simonds says.

“The team of volunteers that we have are just extraordinary – we have the radio show of course, and the volunteers also go in and play with the kids, read to them, and do craft with them. Last year we recorded 2,337 volunteer hours spend with the children on the wards.

Senior Associates Stephanie Murray and Ben Twomey joined Gold Coast Radio Lollipop Volunteers Liz Proctor and Katy Hooper

“It makes such a difference to the children’s lives and the lives of their families,” she said.

Ramsden Lawyers Senior Associate Ben Twomey says the firm recognises the extraordinary work the volunteers at Radio Lollipop do, and they are looking forward to raising much needed funds through their race day.

“The team at Radio Lollipop work tirelessly to make a difference in sick children’s lives,” Mr Twomey says.

“The charity is completely self-funded and the team work around their own schedules of work, school, university and their own families to volunteer.

“We have approximately 180 people attending the race day and hope to raise between $20,000 and $30,000 for this inspirational charity.

“As a Gold Coast firm we wanted to show our support to a local charity and we hope that by raising money for Radio Lollipop they can focus on doing what they do best – lifting the children’s spirits,” he said.

Broadwater Southport Rotary Continue to Support Radio Lollipop Gold Coast

What generous people are the Rotarians from Broadwater Southport in Queensland!

At a breakfast meeting on Queensland Day, 6th June, Pam Weymouth was presented with a cheque for $3,000 for Radio Lollipop at the Gold Coast by the Broadwater Southport Rotary Club.

It was a picture perfect morning on the Gold Coast with sunshine, sand and simply fantastic yachts in full view as Radio Lollipop and three other charities all received cheques in recognition for the great work undertaken for children on the Gold Coast.

The funds were raised through a ‘Bare your Souls’ fundraising day organized by the Rotary Club at the local Musgrave Hill Bowls Club.

Much needed storage space for the Radio Lollipop studio at the Gold Coast University Hospital will now be possible thanks again to the generous donation from the Broadwater Southport Rotary Club.

Thank you Rotary – you rock!
