Queensland Maroons make a surprise visit to the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital

In the week of their final State of Origin game for the year, Queensland Maroons players took time out of their busy schedules to visit some of their biggest fans at the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital.

Radio Lollipop Brisbane Chairperson Michael Gilbert said the children couldn’t have been more excited to have Maroons players, Sam Thaiday, Greg Inglis and Nate Myles visit them at their bedsides and spread the Queensland cheer.

“It’s no secret that many of the children in hospital are big fans of The Maroons, with rooms decorated and jerseys worn ahead of game nights. To have the Queensland Maroons visit was an incredible experience for the children and their families,” Mr Gilbert said.

“Words can often not explain how much it means to the children to have their sporting legends visit at a time in their lives when they’re sick and may be feeling sad or bored. One young child was moved to tears of joy when his favourite player Sam Thaiday entered his Maroons decorated room.

“There will be children and their families leaving the hospital with more than autographed posters, they’ll be leaving with memories of their favourite sporting team spreading smiles and distracting them from a difficult time in their lives.”

Queensland Rugby League Managing Director Robert Moore said:

“We’re extremely grateful to Radio Lollipop and the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital for giving members of the Queensland Maroons team an opportunity to get involved.

“The skills of our players are celebrated every week, but it’s the little things away from the bright lights like this visit that demonstrate how our elite players make a difference in the community.

“Sam, Nate and Greg are true professionals, and our organisation is extremely proud of their involvement.”

Radio Lollipop is very appreciative to the Queensland Maroons for making this wonderful experience happen.

 

The Governor of Queensland visits Radio Lollipop Brisbane

Radio Lollipop Brisbane was honoured to receive a visit from the Governor of Queensland, His Excellency The Honourable Paul de Jersey AC.

The Radio Lollipop team and children at the Lady Cilento Hospital were delighted to welcome him into the studio.

We put the Governor of Queensland in the studio interview chair so the children could listen in and ask him questions, here’s what we found out:

Favourite part about being the Governor of Queensland:

The Governor is often travelling across the State meeting with various community groups, mayors and business delegates, and really enjoys meeting everyday people. His favourite part of the role is getting to learn about different people, community groups and organisations.

Which exciting places have you been able to visit and who have you met?

The Governor has met Her Majesty The Queen, and also met President Obama during the G20 summit in Brisbane. He enjoys meeting and talking with the Queenslanders that he takes great pride in representing.

There’s a new Avengers movie out at the moment, who would you say is your favourite superhero?

The Governor’s a fan of Iron Man but his favourite avenger was the Incredible Hulk, as the Governor used to read about him and see him in movies when he was growing up.

And if you could have any super power, what would it be?

Being able to fly or being invisible would be great, but he believes that the ability to make people smile and be happy is a real super power (just like our Lollipop Playmakers do every shift!).
